SHEPHERD has a proud history of assisting Local Government with specialist asset management, GIS, and civil engineering services, and has established a trusted reputation for delivering innovative, practical, and technically excellent outcomes. The business diversified into civil project management, specialising in disaster recovery and flood restoration projects, in 2016 and now offers a fully integrated service including project and contract management, GIS and systems support, and asset accounting support.

From these strong foundations the business has continued to grow, and today the company remains a leader in road asset management and an emerging leader in disaster recovery systems. They are inspired to make a difference to regional and remote communities by sharing their ability to solve complex issues with practical advice and innovative systems.

About the Position

Reporting to the Manager National Projects Civil and Disaster Recovery you will effectively and efficiently plan and deliver projects in a way that meets or exceeds client and contract expectations. As a project manager you will ensure the safe and efficient delivery of SHEPHERD civil and disaster recovery projects to ensure all necessary feasibility, design, permits and approvals, contract administration, quality and other project specific requirements are met.

One of the most important projects is in Mission Beach for Cassowary Coast Council with 40% of Jasper work still to be delivered in addition to recent rain events across the region and more delivery required. Other projects in North QLD are anticipated but you could work on any number of projects in the southern part of the State dependent upon where you live. Other relevant sites include Scenic Rim Regional Council and Gympie Regional Council.

About You

In this leadership role you will be confident of your understanding of how local government operates gained from working within or alongside Councils. You can confidently and respectfully converse with all levels of Council but do so with authority when required. Coming to the table with facts and solutions in a transparent and upfront manner whilst following SHEPHERD systems will characterise how you operate. Understanding that SHEPHERD are there in a consulting capacity and not as the principal will ensure you are making recommendations and not giving the directions.

As part of the SHEPHERD Civil and Disaster recovery team you will be closely involved in decisions and have your ideas and initiatives supported. Everything gets peer reviewed, and this is expected of all PMs to ensure that there is consistency and best practice being applied to every project. This is not about micromanaging but about making sure everything is appropriate for the work being undertaken.

Whilst being a certified PM is preferable if you hold at least 10 years’ experience as a PM this will be equally recognised.

Why this Role?

The appeal of the role is being able to make a difference in a variety of Councils and to be able to have some genuine work/life balance. Culture is everything and the company puts family first and foremost so be reassured that this isn’t just talk – it is supported from the top down.

You will have a structured, ‘hands on’ onboarding program which is both one on one and with a buddy system.  You can also be assured that everyone in the organisation helps everyone when needed. PM’s can move around easily as everything is done the same way, they all know each other and a personable approach characterises the organization. This is a flexible work environment designed to support your lifestyle. Enjoy the perks of remote work with reduced commuting costs and less stress. For those on the move, SHEPHERD provide top-of-the-range vehicles and tools to ensure you are equipped for success, whether you are in the field or traveling across states. They value your wellbeing and ensure a healthy work-life balance through initiatives like fatigue management and mental health support policies, complemented by access to external wellbeing resources.

Personal circumstances that allow for travel and time to be on site will be necessary. Suitable accommodation is always provided and if it is a location where your family may want to join you on weekends this is also supported. You will arguably earn more than you do currently. Unlike other organisations, you will also be paid door to door and not simply just when you are ‘on the job and be supported by a manager who will provide further education and training if required and who is genuinely interested in your overall motivation and attitude and in how he can help you to succeed.
